As we settle into the new school year, we enjoy to joke about parents everywhere collectively sighing with relief. After spending all summer with your kids, they are now being housed and watched over by your local school staff, being taught another round of fresh knowledge. While you might be stressing over collecting your child’s required school supplies, take a moment to realize that you don’t have it as hard as witch or wizard parents.
What do we mean? Here is a list of everything a wizard student was required to have upon arriving for their first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – at least in the 1990’s and purely speculated of course what would us muggles know really?:
oThree Sets of Plain Work Robes (Black)
oOne Plain Black Pointed Hat
oOne Pair of Protective Gloves (dragon hide or similar)
oOne Winter Cloak
oThe Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1 by Miranda Goshawk
oA History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
oMagical Theory by Adalbert Waffling
oA Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch
oOne Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore
oMagical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger
oFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander
oThe Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble
oAnd assorted work by the famous wizard Gilderoy Lockhart
o1 Cauldron (standard size 2)
o1 set of glass or crystal phials
o1 set of brass scales

How much will this all cost you? Oh, no more than $1,031. That’s not counting tuition, which puts your bill well over $40,000 per year. Merlin’s beard!
